Tarpon on the Flats - Destination: Key West |

 Key West is a favorite fishing destination of mine, one that I try to visit annually. Sure, there are plenty of places throughout the Keys where you can get in on some hot flats action without going all the way down to Key West, but the combination of nightlife, great restaurants and a cool vibe pair quite nicely with fantastic fishing.
Fishing-wise, Key West certainly boasts all that southern Florida has to offer: reef fishing, sight casting to cobia, blue water and my favorite, the flats.

Don't Get Twisted! Putting New Line On Your Reel |

 You're heading out for that first session with nice fresh line on your reel. You get to your double secret fishing spot and see surface action - big stripers or bluefish are crashing bait. Your heartbeat elevates and your hands shake as you tie on your favorite bait and heave out that first cast. Arrgghhh!! The new line comes off the reel in tight coils, a couple of which glom onto each other twenty feet or so from the end of your rod. Unfortunately, that's just far enough for a big bass to pick up your bait and charge away. | |

I've always been fascinated with fishing lures, and I've also always been interested in tinkering and tweaking them. To me, one of the things that attracts me to fishing is the constant experimentation that is necessary to be successful. In order to consistently catch fish, you need to switch things up and present the proper bait at the proper time in the right location. 
In my local waters of Vineyard Sound here in Massachusetts, one the main forage items for game fish in the Spring is squid. Each year countless numbers of them enter the Sound early in the season, where they will spawn and then die. Local game fish such as stripers and fluke take advantage of this virtual all-you-can-eat buffet, and if there's one thing they can't resist, it's a squid. 
Having just got returned from a tarpon fishing/filming trip to Key West, I have travel on the brain, so this installment of the Hogy Approved Products is focusing on two recent discoveries I've made. Whether it's traveling from boat to boat, boat to surf, on the road or on a plane 
I'm personally endorsing these two products as significantly enhancing my angling experience.
