Hogy Lure Of the Month: 10" Jiggn' Hogy Swim Bait

The 10" Jig'n Hogy was originally designed based on the feedback we heard from anglers using large jig heads to fish with Hogys in deeper water, up to 60 plus feet. Since the rigging groove associated with the Hogy Quick Rig was unnecessary to anglers fishing with jig heads, anglers said they preferred one without it, which would allow a for a little extra gripping power on jigs 3 ounces and larger. And so came the 10" Jig'n Hogy Swim Bait.

I like to bounce the bait on the bottom. If fishing in an area with strong currents, cast up-tide approximately 45 degrees and let the jig sink to the bottom. Take a few quick turns of the reel to regain connection of the jig so that you will be able to feel any hits. Then work the rod, with the tip up, so the bait bounces on and off the bottom as you slowly reel it in. Your strikes will most often occur when the rod tip is between 12:00 and 3:00.

If you're casting from a beach, a slow retrieve while bouncing the bottom can be a deadly technique, particularly in strong wind and surf conditions. The added weight will aid with casting and also help keep the bait in the strike zone. In calmer situations, the puffs of sand created from the jig bouncing on the bottom will draw fish from far away to check out the commotion. In the case of the Jiggn' Hogy, they'll find one heck of a sand eel trying to borrow into the sand. Boaters should not forget the Jiggn' Hogy when drifting for the same reason.

Boaters who troll should fish the Jig'n Hogy Swim-bait as they would a bucktail, with lots of small jigging motions, 18" to 24" sweeps of the rod. In deeper water, a combination of weighted line, (Keep an eye out for the new Hogy Fast Sinking Trolling Line) and large jig heads will get you down. Don't forget how effective those puffs of sand are in terms of attracting a game-fish's attention, so keep the bait slow and low!
