Connecticut Broodstock Atlantic Salmon on Hogys!
|
By Capt. Ryan Sansoucy of Hush Fishing Company I have been chasing state-introduced Atlantic salmon on Connecticut's Shetucket River for the past nine years with my fly rod, spending the first five dealing with an extreme rate of failure, finally catching only a few fish in the tail end of the fifth year. As I progressed as a saltwater flats guide things started to change for me on the river as well. I was seeing fish in high water, noticing things about the salmon that had eluded me in the past - things like their feeding habits, what enticed them to strike on instinct rather then aggravation, how they moved around the river and how to fish different water levels. |

What Do You Get When You Marry A Bomber WIth A Hogy? The Bogy!
|
|
by Kurt Johnson
(Editor's Note: From time to time we get some great ideas about ways to adapt and modify Hogys. Here's one from Kurt Johnson, an angler from Florida who has been using our products with great success for a few seasons both in his home waters and here in the waters off Cape Cod. This is something he came up he calls The Bogy - a "marriage" of sorts between a Bomber hard bait and a Hogy! Gene Bourque, editor Hogy E-Magazine)
Hi Mike,
These pics are hot off the press. The lure is (was) a jointed "Bomber Long A," which you can see I have modified.
The whole trick is at the connecting eye on the back half of the front lure body. It is difficult to unbend and re-bend to accept the Owner 11/0. This I think creates a weakening of the metal and it is very difficult to get the re-bend just right. I have broken a few trying and had to throw them away. The eye of the hook also has a tendency to catch on the eye of the plug and lock the tail to the side causing an awkward spinning of the whole rig. You certainly know it on the retrieve when that happens. It casts moderate to poorly, but when it is swimming like it should, it looks simply too real.

Kayak Fishing for Reds: Destination Mosquito Lagoon |
|
by Randy English
Fishing from a kayak has many advantages over any other means of angling, including the most expensive flats boats. The number one advantage is the stealth factor... kayaks draft less water, push less water and are very quiet with little or no hull slap. In addition you are getting a good workout - after all, you are the motor! Living here in Titusville, Florida I am close to some of the best intercoastal fishing in the United States: Merritt Island Wildlife Refuge, Indian and Banana Rivers and my favorite, Mosquito Lagoon. It's not called Mosquito Lagoon for nothing. At certain times of the year you can be eaten alive. But mosquitoes aren't the only things biting on the lagoon, which brings me to the species of fish that got me hooked on kayak fishing: redfish. |
